This week I finished another novel by James A. Michener, Hawaii. I picked it up at our library’s used book sale and then realized it was from the original 1959 printing, back when men were men and epic novels cost $2.95. It was, as with all Michener novels, fantastic. I now understand the movie The Descendants, learned how volcanoes were formed and have a better sense of what American citizenship means to those who don’t have it.
About once a year I read a Michener novel. Last year was Chesapeake. Michener stated up front that his novels were fiction but I believe there must be more than a little truth to his stories, what with the meticulous research that went into each book. It’s a great irony that he didn’t know who his biological parents were or exactly when he was born, but he knew many people and places inside and out. His writing is so engrossing, his stories and characters so captivating that, without fail, I feel compelled to visit wherever he wrote about.
THE WEEK IN REVIEW
Last Sunday was my husband’s birthday and Friday was our friend Dan’s birthday so what better excuse to get together with our good friends? Thanks to Laura and Neil for a great party! And now it’s time to unveil the project I mentioned a couple of posts back.
I made David a scarf for Christmas and was then asked to make his friend Dan one as well. They both love to play Minecraft, a game where you “mine” materials like dirt, stone and metal and then build with them. It’s a bit like Lego in a PC game. It also involves agriculture, animal husbandry and hostile creatures (spiders and zombies and skeletons, oh my). It’s quite amazing to see what people have accomplished.
These scarves were some of the most challenging patterns I’ve done. Dan’s is on the left; David’s is on the right. Mason, who loves to play too, has requested a scarf but I think I need a break!
THE SQUARES – WEEK 4
Squares one through four are all from my chunky yarn stash. The majority of my energy was focused on Dan’s scarf so I didn’t give a lot of thought to design this week. I did, however, celebrate by getting back into the alphabet blanket – squares five and six.
Square seven worked out nicely with a Sc-HDc-Dc-Dc-HDc-Sc pattern. It created an attractive wave look.
